Christmas is over. Well, not really since the birth of Jesus is the gift that lasts forever.

But the celebrations and gift exchanges are over for this year, at least for most of us. So this week, we look forward to the New Year.

Perhaps you’re thinking about resolutions for 2016. Or maybe you’ve given up on making resolutions because you never seem to keep them. We are human, after all, and all of our good intentions tend to go by the wayside after a few weeks…or days.

Perhaps we resolve to stop doing things that hurt ourselves or others (eating too much, gossiping) or to start doing things that we know we ought to do (exercising, spending time with those who are sick or lonely, being more generous, spending more time reading God’s Word). But many times, we fail despite our good intentions. At least, I do. What about you?

The good news is that God loves us in spite of our failures. And, if we ask for His forgiveness, He gives it to us. If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 1:2).

So don’t abandon the idea of New Year’s Resolutions. Call them goals, if you prefer. But ask God for His help, and when you fail, ask for His forgiveness and start again. Just don’t give up on trying to live the life He wants for you.[Tweet “We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. #‎God‬’sCharacter #NewYear”]
