This morning’s news carried the announcement of a major earthquake off the Alaska coast, with tsunami warnings and watches for the coastlines from the Aleutian Islands to California. The tsunami turned out to be less serious than at first thought, but meanwhile, thousands of people no doubt wondered how they would escape potential forty-foot waves.
The earthquake came on the heels of numerous other disasters we’ve seen over the last few months: fires and mudslides in California, blizzards across the Midwest and Northeast U.S., a volcano erupting in Japan, hurricanes devastating parts of the South last fall, senseless mass shootings.
Then, of course, there was the mistaken missile warning in Hawaii.
All these situations create anxiety. In each situation, whether or not it directly affects us, we wonder, “Would we be rescued?”
But here’s the good news: God promises, “Because you love me, I will rescue you. I will protect you because you know my name. When you call to me, I will answer you” (Psalm 91:14-15, GW).
One of God’s names is Rescuer. Sometimes His rescue is a physical, earthly rescue, but sometimes it’s not. However, His eternal rescue is guaranteed for all those who call on His name.
So when you feel anxious about the news reports and warnings of disasters, take heart, and read Psalm 91.
